F. W. Thomas, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. Attlee thanks his correspondent for their letter and request to be placed on the Crown patronage list and continues 'I think I ought to explain that there are only about twenty vacancies or so a year on an average and many have but small stipends. About half of them are in the north of England, and though I will certainly bear your name in mind, I am afraid there is not much hope of my being able to meet your wishes.' Together with a T.L.S. by Laurence Attlee (1884-1969) brother of Clement, one page, 4to, Groombridge, Kent, 5th September 1956, to John. Attlee congratulates his correspondent on their engagement and continues 'I went up to Lords on the doleful Saturday when cricket was washed out and I heard from Ashcroft that you were there. I thought I might be able to meet you but with everyone going home I failed.
