Description
An Orson Welles Set of Decorative Metal Boxes. The first small, made of silver, illegible engraving on top and bottom, Russian hallmark, stamped "84," a gift from Feodor Chaliapin [the celebrated Russian opera singer] to Welles' mother, Beatrice -- Chaliapin visited her in Chicago many times when Welles was a young boy; the second much larger, detailed foliage design on all sides, possible Turkish hallmark, bought by Welles while he was filming "Othello" in 1952; included with a letter from Beatrice Welles indicating she consigned this lot directly to Heritage Auctions. (Please note both boxes have dents and scratches due to age and use.)
