Description
Rube Cross' legacy is the continuation of the lineage of commercial fly tyers in the Catskill tradition. His is preceded by Theodore Gordon, from which he learned to tie from studying his methods by untying his flies and succeeded by the Darbees and Dettes that utilized the same method by studying Mr. Cross' designs. Although fly tying methods were kept secretive and usually a common practice in those days in fear perhaps of competition, Mr. Cross is credited to writing three books on the subject. Ironically, it is well documented that he exhibited his fly tying talents at the New York City Sportsman show for all who were interested to witness.
This is a continuation of the Hendrickson/Davis/Sampson collection held in October, 2013. The consignor, Mrs. Sonni Hendrickson-Sampson has agreed to relinquish at auction only a small portion of this collection to the public so as to not hinder the fly collecting market. She has agreed to donate the remaining collection to the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum. Her father, Sam Hendrickson and her stepfather both had a special place in their hearts for this region and she feels that both these men would be satisfied with her decision. She would like to thank all of you who took the time to speak with her at the last auction and the interest you showed in her family's history. Signed letter from the consignor containing description and photograph(s) of this lot on Crossroads Angling Auction letterhead will accompany this lot.
