A very fine New York miniature of a young lady in original, embossed leather case
This very fine painting shows a young woman in three-quarter view with elaborate curled and braided hair adorned with a pearl hair clip and earring wearing a blue dress with a white lace collar. The miniature portrait is presented in an original, ornamentally embossed case with the representation of an eagle on the back. The interior is lined with purple velvet on one side, the glazing on the brass mat is decorated with a florally embossed, gold-plated brass border. The spandrels of the mat are impressed ‘KERTSON / 421 B. WAY’ and ‘COR. CANAL ST. / N.Y.’ (Marcellus Kertson, 421 Broadway, Corner Canal Street, New York). The studio of Marcellus Kertson, a famous daguerreotypist, was listed at Broadway, New York in the mid-19th century.
The miniature is in good original condition with minor wear consistent with age. The case is a little rubbed along the edges. The closed case measures 9.5 x 8 x 2 cm (height x width x depth).
