Exhibition / Literature:
The offered 1952 Halsman photograph of Marilyn, was included in the Philippe Halsman Retrospective, The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, November 6, 1998 through February 7, 1999; and on pg. 133 of the Exhibition Catalogue.
Born in 1906 in Riga, Latvia, Halsman studied engineering in Dresden before moving to Paris, where he opened a photographic studio in 1932. His time spent in Paris allowed for the development of a direct and personal approach to photographing his clients, importantly he learned to hone in on the particulars of detail. As both a studio and news photographer, Halsman took inspiration from the contemporary art and entertainment scenes. He specialized in portraiture.
His photographs of Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and of countless others have become world icons.
