This lot comprises twelve bottles of red wine from Chianti Classico in Tuscany: three bottles of 1990 vintage Castello di Fonterutoli Ser Lapo, one bottle of 1995 vintage Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico, four bottles of 1997 vintage Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico and four bottles of 1999 vintage Castello di Brolio.

The Tuscan winegrowing region of Chianti, home to Chianti red wine, is a heterogenic wine-growing area with truly diverse geological and geographical landscapes and wine styles. Chianti therefore reveals many different faces and wine qualities. Chiantis are cuvées made using various grape varieties, mainly Sangiovese. The Chianti region is divided into seven DOCG sub-regions, with some of the finest, most long-lasting growths come from Chianti Classico and Rufina:

Chianti Classico DOCG is produced in the historic part of Tuscany, between Florenz and Siena. It must be matured in oak barrels for at least a year, Chianti Classico Reserva for two. The grape variety proportions in cuvee are also set by wine authorities: Sangiovese makes up at least eighty percent of the wine. White wine grapes, formerly commonplace, are no longer allowed.

1990 was a truly great vintage in Tuscany, with hot weather and a small harvest – ideal conditions for top wines. The wines are intensive, long-lasting and at the peak of their maturity. 1995 was a fine vintage in Tuscany and Piedmont, leading to the creation of some great wines, the best of which are now at their peak, albeit in small numbers. In 1997 the summer in Tuscany was extremely hot, the quality of the wines is rather inconsistent but some are quite extraordinary. 1999 was an excellent vintage in Tuscany producing artful, racy wines.

The 1995 vintage Fonterutoli Chianti Classico was rated 88 points by Robert Parker in 1997. The 1997 vintage Fonterutoli Chianti Classico was rated 87 points by Parker in 1999 and 88 points by James Suckling for Wine Spectator in the same year. Both Parker and Suckling rated the 1999 vintage Brolio 90 points in 2002.

The fill levels are excellent (2x base of neck, 10x into neck). Some labels are slightly damaged. The capsules are in perfect condition.
