(1812-1883, Confederate Vice President) to Dr. J. M. Green, Surgeon in Charge, Virginia General Hospital, Richmond, dated at Richmond, August 31, 1862; a long letter written on behalf of John T. Hill, a private in Co. F, 44th Ga. Regiment, then sick in the hospital; Hill had been denied leave to recuperate at home and Stephens wrote very critically of the conditions in Confederate hospitals and the benefits of a home environment; 3 pp. on blue lined paper, with integral address. (Hill recovered enough to return to service; was wounded at Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862; and died at a Richmond hospital on Jan. 9, 1863).
Condition
Some losses by removal from an album, taped repairs.
