Signed "J.A. Garfield/Hiram June 1st 1857 " on front free endpaper with "Copperheads" penciled by Garfield inside back cover. Also Garfield's 2.75" x 1.5" bookplate "Inter Folia Fructus/Library of / James A. Garfield" inside front cover.
The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by Garfield's widow Lucretia, houses almost 3,000 books that were used by the President and his wife.  They were voracious readers and had amassed a large collection of books.  Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned which this volume comes.
