Description
DESCRIPTION: Felice Beato (Italian, 1820-1907). A Second Opium War photograph album, China, 1860. Album of fifty-six albumen prints including ten multiple-part panoramas. Each titled and dated in English and German on mounts. Final page with three titled portrait photographs of Prince Kung, Lt. General Hope Grant and Lord Elgin, major players in the treaty as noted. Paper and leather covered album boards embossed "Album von China" with owner's name "David Schlatter" to lower right. Felice Beato was the first photographer to document a military campaign when he accompanied the British Army into China in 1860. His photographs captured not only strategic military positions and the aftermath of battle but also buildings such as the Summer Palace before its destruction by the British. MEASUREMENTS: Images range from approximately 9-1/4" x 11-1/2" to 9" x 68". Album size 16-3/4" x 14-3/4". CONDITION: Pages 9 and 27 detached but included. Page 38 missing image (Sacred Temple of Heaven). Toning to images and mounts as expected. Boards with wear and toning. Front cover detached with minor dampstaining to interior outside corners.
