Description
A PAIR OF LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE PATINATED BRONZE CANDLE STANDS, FRENCH 19TH CENTURY. Set on matching ebonized shaped wood bases, and rising from three scrolled bracket form feet, upon which rest three finely sculpted winged angels embracing the base of the central column, decorated with acanthus and fruit garlands beneath the central node, the base of which displaying three cartouches modeled in low relief with religious imagery, and above, three niches depicting a monastic author holding book and quill pen beneath a hexagonal shaped overhanging element with each corner displaying a winged cherub head, and above, three female winged figures supporting an acanthus element sculpted with religious scenes, and above, more winged cherubs beneath which is displayed Episcopal martyr, Papal tiara, crosses, palms, chalices and other Ecclesiastical symbols. At top, an ornately sculpted drip pan, the underside of rim decorated with winged cherubs, three cartouches with various saints and at top, an ornate pierced carved, ribbon tied, floral decorated rim. Inscribed CLAUDION on the central node of one, and on both, the Roman numerals ANNO MDCIIC. Overall height 77.5 inches -6 feet 5.5 inches (197 cm).
