Pair of Parcel Gilt Polychromed Carved Wood Blackamoor Torcheres, early 20th c., the turbaned male and female figures in classical robes, now holding sprays of yellow plumes, on a faux marble stepped octagonal base, H.- 80 in., W.- 28 in., D.- 40 in.

Condition consistent with age. The male figure is observed with cracks to the painted surface noted mainly near the torch, arms, shoulders and chest; there is an approximately ½ inch crack to the figure’s nose, and a chip to the paint at the belt, resulting in exposed gesso measuring approximately ½ inch in length. The female figure has cracking noted to the cheek, jaw line, eye and wrist, with an apparent repair and regilting near the torchiere handle. Both figures are observed with inpainting repair throughout, with areas of regilting. Yellow plumes are now used as torchiere decoration. A remarkable pair.
