This photograph was taken around the 1940/50s by the American photographer Helen Brethauer, a close friend of Ansel Adams. The vintage gelatin silver print on barite paper depicts in intense black and white contrast the gable of a church, crowned by a cross on the roof.
The photograph has been mounted to cardboard. The left margin has a faint creasing mark and the upper corners show some traces of a former framing. The cardboard is slightly foxed. The work has been inscribed on the cardboard with ‘Helen Brethauer’ in the lower right corner. The sheet size is 34.6 x 27.5 cm and the total dimensions are 37.3 x 30 cm.

Helen Brethauer is an American photographer and a close friend of the famous photographer Ansel Adams. She lived in Oakland, California, was active in the local photo clubs and her work has been exhibited in the local neighborhoods. Brethauer was able to capture delightful contrasts in her pictures, which she usually made in the area of her residence.
