Item Details
Description
We are very pleased to present this great pair of fine hand painted porcelain creamers including a scarce Imperial Nippon marked (Van Patten #38) pre-1921 floral example, and a fine 1937 Royal Doulton floral collar based Glamis thistle creamer, signed by the artist, P. Curnock. The Nippon carries the scarce Imperial Nippon mark is highly collectible and measures 5 x 4.75 x 4.25 inches high, and is in excellent condition. The Royal Doulton carries the lion & crown, Made in England stamp with a 10 to the right of the crown. PLUS, this decoration is a Glamis Thistle, found near the Glamis Castle of Queen Elizabeth. As collectors know, a number located directly to the right of the crown denotes a late 1920s to 1930s potting. The manufacturer date is arrived at by adding the number to the year 1927; ergo, a 10 (such as ours) right of the crown signifies 1937. It measures 4.25 x 2.75 x 4 inches tall, and also is in excellent condition. The total lot weight is 1#. xxxxxxxxxxxx. In 1878, Sir Henry Doulton purchased Pinder, Bourne and Company of Burslem. Queen Victoria knighted Henry Doulton in 1887 for his innovations in the ceramic art. In 1882, the company became Doulton and Company, Ltd. and a second factory was built in Burslem which still continues to produce the famous figurines, jugs, and table wares. Doulton added both specialized porcelain and earthenware production to its offerings in 1884, with specific emphasis placed upon new dynamic decorated porcelain in addition to the other production lines. Doulton figures were made at the Burslem plants from 1890 until 1978. Stoneware production ceased at Lambeth in 1956. Doulton's famed high quality bone china was achieved in major part by the combination of the three main ingredients for its wares including Cornish stone, china clay, and calcinated bone ash. This mixture resulted in a translucent, but strong, and easily hand decorated bodies for any dinnerware forms.
