Item Details
Description
We are exceptionally proud to present this Rare & stunning pair of 1920’s candlesticks finished in the unique crystal bowl and Elfin green bases, adorned with the famed Rock Crystal Rose engraving from H.P Sinclaire & Co. of Corning, N.Y. (1904-1928). Sinclaire is recorded to have made only (2) candlestick patterns, the #12900 – a straight baluster style, and our #12928, with a deflecting bobeche and a pinched knob, wide accentuated base. The #12928 was offered in several solid colors, and the crystal & colored base combinations, which are some of the rarest and most valuable. Our gorgeous exact candlestick can be seen on Page #167 of, The Glass Candlestick Book, Volume 3 / by Tom Felt and Elaine & Rich Stoer. Ours are in wonderful condition, and book for $300+. These rare candle holders stand 4.5 X 4.5 X 3.25" tall, and weigh 2#. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. When Harry P. Sinclaire, Jr. opened his cutting shop in Corning, NY in 1904 the business was well-positioned to become a successful enterprise, not least because American cut glass had reached the apex of its popularity at about this time. But other factors also predicted a successful future, factors that centered on "H. P." himself. The man, personable and good-looking, had an excellent, although informal, liberal arts education through use of his father's extensive personal library. More formally, he received practical training at the Rochester (NY) Business Institute, training that enabled him to assume the title of book-keeper at Hawkes Rich Cut Glass Works in 1883. At this company he was trained in all aspects of glass-making by T. G. Hawkes himself, and eventually he assumed increased responsibility in the management of the company.H. P.'s artistic ability, evident from an early age, was encouraged at the Hawkes Company where he designed the engraved glass that the company displayed at the Paris Exposition in 1889. In 1900 Harry became the only other owner of more than one share of stock in the re-organized firm now called T. G. Hawkes & Company, Hawkes himself being the other owner. By this time Hawkes and Sinclaire agreed about little pertaining to product lines. Hawkes preferred rich-cut glass, and Sinclaire loved engraving. The rift precipitated Harry’s leaving to pursue his own vision. Subsequent to leaving Hawkes, Sinclaire was in dire need of quality crystal blanks to finish. He approached, and was rewarded with a contract from one of the other great names in American cut crystal, C. Dorflinger. Dorflinger cut crystal was and remains one of the finest names in the history of brilliant cut glass, and Dorflinger was pleased to support the new company. After C. Dorflinger & Sons closed in 1920, Sinclaire opened a glass-blowing factory in Bath, NY, moving it to Dunkirk, NY in 1925. H.P. Sinclaire passed suddenly in 1927, and the Dunkirk factory closed immediately. Glass cutting continued at the Corning shop until the following year when the entire company closed. *** Total Weight: 2#
