Description

A cream wool coat trimmed with ermine, attributed to Madeleine Vionnet, circa 1926-27, unlabelled, with radiating seams along the rear neck and sleeve shoulders, the front panels and lower rear skirt panels cut in single L-shaped sections, part-lined in cream silk, chest approx 86cm 34in; Provenance: purchased Christies 12th July 1988, lot 132 where it was catalogued as by Vionnet but un-labelled The lightweight wool and the cream colour suggest that this coat was for summer-wear. Vionnet not only liked to trim her clothes in fur but also designed coats entirely made of fur. When war broke out in 1939 and she decided to close her fashion house there was a large liquidation of the Maison Vionnet stock at the Hotel Drouot which listed numerous furs including ermine, chinchilla and karakul.
