Description
Civil War U.S. Flag Fragments From a Flag Carried by George A. Nidy, Ohio 19th Infantry Regiment. On February 6, 1864, at the age of 18 years old, George A. Nidy mustered into "A" Company of the Ohio 19th Infantry regiment. Though it is unknown exactly what engagements he was present at, he likely would have seen action at the Battle of Jonesboro, Lovejoy's Station, the Second Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville. This lot includes two segments of a well-used U.S. flag carried by Nidy during the war. The first fragment is a 15 ½" x 9 ½" piece of blue linen from the canton with double-sided hand-applied 4" white linen stars. The second fragment is a 21" x 5.5" portion of white linen stripe. Numerous tears, holes and stains appear on this section, and a hand-written note from the family states, in part: "Part of Flag my grandfather made & carried through the Civil War. His blood from wounds are on the stripes which were by shells. His name was George A. Nidy...". Despite whatever wounds Nidy sustained, he survived the war and mustered out of the army on October 24, 1865.
