Hayley Lever (New York/Massachusetts, 1875-1958), oil on canvas board painting depicting a coastal village, with two row boats on the beach in the foreground. Signed lower right. Sight: 17" H x 11" W, gilt frame: 21" H x 26-1/2" W. Provenance: Private East Tennessee collection. Biography (courtesy Michael David Zellman: 300 Years of American Art): Australian born Hayley Lever was known for his post impressionist town-shore landscapes. He studied in London and began painting seaside paintings at an artist's colony in Cornwall. Lever came to America in 1911 and soon became one of the most widely exhibited artists in New York; he taught at the Art Students League from 1919 to 1931 and became director of the Studio Art Club in Mount Vernon, New York. Lever had a summer studio in Glouster, Massachusetts, where many of his coastal scenes were painted.
Condition
Overall very good condition. Minor spots of inpainting in upper left sky; minor abrasions on frame.
