Spanish School oil on canvas, manner of El Greco, unsigned, large half-length portrait depicting a saint holding a child on his shoulder, possibly St. Joseph. Later gilt/ebonized frame. 35-1/2" x 31-1/2" sight, 41" x 36" framed. Provenance: Estate of Letha J. Cote, Palm Springs, CA.

Appears to have an old linen relining. Possibility of the older canvas laid down on a larger canvas with the borders inpainted to match the older laid down canvas borders.Overall cracquelure with light minute scattered flaking. 1/8" abrasion with paint loss near staff. 2" area of scattered but concentrated flaking near lower left edge. 2-1/2" crack or possible tear on left side near staff. Blacklight reveals scattered infill painting to old cracks and limited areas of inpainting below saint's ear and on child's lower leg.
