Description
A choice Luba Shankadi seat from the Congo, mid-20th Century, a prestige object for a chief or someone of high status, as the Luba headed an extensive, centrally organized state structured around divine kingship and rule by council. The piece is very nicely carved the kneeling woman, whose hands support the seat, with sensitive features and large narrowed eyes, her hair in the layered 'shankadi' style which was a pan-shaped hair arrangement typical in the region during the 19th century. W: ca. 10 ½ in (ca. 26.5 cm), H: 17 in (43 cm). A lovely example with a silky patina showing long use. Some minor losses around the base. Ex Dr. Z. Haddad coll. Paris/Beverly Hills, Ca. acquired in the 1960’s; Ex Venerable West S.F. Valley Collection.
