VanGilder is a prolific artist and outdoorsman whose works are known for their creativity, realism, and natural beauty. He is considered a master of the wildlife genre. Earlier in his career, VanGilder was most known for near photographic realism in figure studies, which were highly sought after. In the late 1970s, he turned his attention from figures to wildlife art. It was during this transition period that the mallard painting originated. A rare and important find for collectors, this painting has not been massed produced, no lithoprints exist. One of a kind, it clearly demonstrates techniques VanGilder ultimately mastered that will be familiar in later work such as First to Return Snow Geese and Grand Passage - Canvasbacks.
