Provenance: Collection of Michele Tiziano, Germany

Very finely carved pair of Baroque angels
The present pair of wooden Baroque angels was manufactured around 1700, probably in Northern Italy. The figures were carved from lime wood all round. The body and heads of the standing figures were not painted. The clothes, the wings and the base are painted in red and show remnants of former gilding. The figures feature a very detailed carving and expressive faces with flowing curls. The garments show a fine arrangement of the folds and are gathered with a button above one knee. One angel presents the sudarium Christi (Acheiropoieton, Vera Icon). The second angel lacks the attribute of the rod. The angels stand on a rectangular plinth, the corners of which are chamfered. The plinths are mounted on profiled period bases.
The angels show some wear consistent with age. There are traces of an inactive woodworm infestation. One hand has been professionally re-carved. The red paint has been restored in places. There are some material losses caused by damage or woodworms. The total height of the angels is approximately 40 cm each.
