Lovely large Baroque angel
The present wooden angel dating from the 17th century was probably originally a side assistant figure of a South German Baroque altar. The big, barefoot figure was carved all round and shows polychrome paint and a partial gilding. The kneeling angel has attached arms, and one arm is stretched upwards. It wears a dark green robe with a gilt sash, bound over his shoulder and tied at the waist. The rims and the hem of the garment are also gilt.
The altar angel shows some paint losses and restoration marks due to its age. The paint was passed over later. At the hand of the stretched up arm are missing two fingers, and on the other hand lacks the index finger and the tip of the little finger. In addition, there are traces of an inactive woodworm infestation and light moisture damage in the area of the knees. The height of the angel is 80 cm.
