Southern Germany, 18th century
Fine carving of a man in purgatory
Dimensions: 26.5 x 21 cm (H x W)
This wooden sculpture of a man is carved three-dimensionally and still bears rests of the original paint. The man’s hips are surrounded by flames of the purgatory. His arms are spread as if he would receive his fate deliberately. Two holes underneath suggest that the sculpture was originally part of a large altarpiece, such as in St. Egid in Klagenfurt.
This fragment is l in an age-appropriate condition. The left arm is broken in half. The right arm was originally broken off at the shoulder and was reattached. The original paint is only partly preserved. The dimensions are 26.5 x 21 cm.
