Description
Black Forest or Alsace, Werkstatt Winterhalder, second half of the 19th Century
Fine painting with harmonious colours
Allegories of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter
Dimensions, framed: 44.5 x 37 cm
These allegorical paintings show the portraits of four finely dressed women representing the four seasons. The respective season is mentioned underneath every portrait: ‘Le Printemps’ (Spring), ‘L’Été’ (Summer), ‘L’Automne’ (Autumn) and ‘L’Hivere’ (Winter). In the 19th Century reverse glass paintings were found in many a farmhouse parlour. They were very popular because the grime from the fireplace or stove could simply be wiped off without affecting the picture’s condition.
Three of the glass paintings are in good condition with light signs of age and use such as partial craquelure and minor colour loss. One of the glass sheets (Spring) shows cracks across the right part of the image. Framed the works measure 44.5 x 37 cm. The glass plates measure 26.5 x 34 cm each. The frames show light colour loss and small nicks here and there as well as some wood worm holes (no activity).
