Maria de La Luz Parra was born in 1934 in the northern Mexican State of Durango. Back in the 1950's Luz was told she had no business pretending to be an artist and that instead she should marry and have children like the other young women in her town. Luz opted instead to be as stubborn as a mule which her mother encouraged to the dismay of her father. Luz's father seeing that he was outnumbered opted to support his wayward daughter in her pursuits. Luz studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City in the 1955. Luz left her critics astonished as she mounted a sole woman show. This exposition was unprecedented in those days yet very successful. Luz is now in a peaceful semi-retirement.
