DESCRIPTION: This is a Red Painted New England shaker staved tub, bucket, or pail with double sapling bands circa 1820s. The New England Shakers formally were known as the United Society of Believers in the Christ's Second Appearing. Antique shaker furniture and boxes are best found near the early settlements of this religious sect in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Ohio, and Kentucky. The meticulous shaker craftsmen used convention and colonial forms but stripped them of all worldly embellishments and produced a furniture extraordinary for its lightness and economy of design. Maple, pine, cherry, butternut, walnut and birch were used. The shaker pail is hand coopered with original red paint and original staves. The initials of the maker “CJB” are branded upon the bottom of the shaker pail in three places as shown in the photos.
