The present gouache by Alfred Haushofer (1872-1943) shows a view of the Isar valley. The balanced composition shows the river meandering through a wooded landscape. The snow-covered Alps throne in the background. In his work, Haushofer tried to capture the changing moods of nature. The sky, often crossed by complex cloud formations, and the water determine the content of his work. Haushofer is primarily known for his numerous evocative panoramas of Lake Chiemsee and its surroundings.
Thematically similar compositions were also created by Rudolf Sieck, another Chiemsee painter and contemporary of Haushofer. An oil painting by Sieck is offered in this auction.
The gouache is in very good condition. The margins are barely noticeably rubbed due to framing (without loss of color). The frame shows some wear. Framed 58 x 42.5 cm measures the plant, the leaf dimensions are 50 x 34.5 cm.
Alfred Haushofer (1872-1943)
Alfred Haushofer, son of the historian Max Haushofer (1840-1907), the co-editor of ‘Künstlerchronik Frauenchiemsee’, lived on Lake Chiemsee from 1907 onwards, where he was one of the founders of the artist group ‘Die Frauenwörther’. Their first exhibition took place on the Fraueninsel in 1921. Haushofer continued to exhibit here on a regular basis. The artist was a contributor of the magazines ‘Jugend’ and ‘Fliegende Blätter’. His oeuvre is defined by depictions of Lake Chiemsee, in particular the Fraueninsel seen from various point of view, echoing the tradition of the Impressionists.
