German painter Georg Macco created this painting around 1920. Macco undertook numerous journeys to the Orient, among others to Cairo and Jerusalem. Therefor it is not surprising that our painting shows a characteristic oriental genre scene. It depicts mearchants in an alley that is covered by a drop shadow, whereas the sky appears in bright blue and the upper facades are immersed in a gentle light by the shining sun. Executed in rapid, almost sketchy brushwork, the artist created an atmospheric oriental scenery due to the use of particular color and light effects.

Orientalism in art began in the 18th Century with the role of exclusive import goods such as Chinese porcelain and ‘chinoiserie’ fashion. The increasing of the domination of Europe over the Middle East led to romanticized notions about the Orient, marked by sensuality and decadence. Towards the end of the 19th century, Orientalism was in its golden age and influenced not only the subjects in painting but also the decor and architecture.

The painting is in an age-appropriate good condition. The canvas is slightly wavy with slight craquelure. The picture is framed in a wide wooden frame that also shows slight signs of use. Overall, the painting is in good condition. The stretcher measures 32 x 21 cm. The framed dimensions are 41 x 30 cm.

Georg Macco (1863-1933)

Georg Macco was born 1863 in Aachen. Like his great-granduncle, the portrait and history painter Alexander Macco, Georg decided to start a painting career and studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf between 1880 and 1887 under Eugen Gustav Dücker and Johann Peter Theodor Janssen. After he first painted alpine and Nordic landscapes, Macco undertook numerous journeys to the Orient, where he found inspiration and motifs for his paintings that eventually made him one of the most sought German Orient painters.
