This painting, executed in oil on canvas, was created by Danish painter Poul Steffensen in 1917. In the center of the composition, two horses and a foal are presented, galloping playfully through a wide field landscape that is covered by a cloudy sky. On the left image of the screen a street runs through the fields, with an automobile driving towards the horizon.



The painting is signed and dated lower left ‘Poul Steffensen. 1917’. It is in good condition, indicating only minor signs of age and wear. The stretcher shows a slight horizontal crease mark in the area of the foal which does not interfere with the quality of the picture. The stretcher frame wears a handwritten annotation on the back according the artist and date. It measures 79.5 x 75.5 cm. The frame shows minor traces of use as well. The overall framed dimensions are 80 x 107 cm.



Poul Steffensen (1866-1923)

Poul Steffensen was born 1866 in Vejerslev, Denmark. He studied under Christian Nielsen Overgaard from 1883-87 and went to the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1887 to 1890 where he was a student of Julius Exner and Carl Bloch. Steffensen is known for his realistic landscapes and animal paintings. He additionally worked as an illustrator as well. (cru)
