Beautiful Romantic depiction of love
The present work was painted by an artist active in the circle of the German School, around 1850. It depicts an everyday subject of the farewell of a fisherman’s couple, which clearly corresponds to the characteristics of German Romanticism, when issues such as ‚desire‘ and ‚love‘ were some of the most requested topics in art. The artist has used the finest strokes of his brushes to present the fisher, embracing his bride for one last time, while she fears and regrets the forthcoming moment. He, in contrast, conveys an image of strength that is evoked through his brief kiss upon her brow.
The edges and the upper margin show slight framing marks, caused by the additional arched piece of the frame which has later been laid out flat on the surface of the plate. Besides, the corners of the plate are minimally bumped and with a small retouching in lower right corner. The paint is slightly rubbed in the lower area of the painting. The carved wooden frame has been gilded and shows small traces of use and age. The framed work measures 45 x 36 cm, whereas the single plate measures 25.2 x 21.5 cm.
