Germany, around 1837
Inscribed ‘Caspar Friedrich Davidus, Pinx. 1837’
Depiction of a boy by the sea
Gilt wooden frame
Overall dimensions, framed: 38 x 44 cm
Good condition
The present oil painting was probably created around 1837 by a German painter. A young boy stands on the shore and looks at the moving sea with a sailing boat in the distance. A storm has arisen, so that the composition is immersed in an atmospheric, grayish light. In an unusual thoughtful position for his age, the boy has folded his hands on the back. His red coat and his white shirt strikingly stand out from the background.
The painting is (falsely) inscribed on the back, ‘Caspar Friedrich Davidus, Pinx. 1837‘. It is varnished and in good condition with light crackle on the paint surface. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals some minor areas of retouching in the lower part of the picture, and a tiny touch-up in the upper right corner. The wooden frame is in good condition with only minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 38 x 44 cm. The stretcher measures 29 x 34.5 cm. (cko)
