Item Details
Description
6 3/4" Turkeytail. Clark Co, IN. Found in 1893. Ex-Bunch, Hendricks, Borden. Thin, well made. Can be seen in a 1950's photo of Earl's shelf in Legends of Prehistoric Art (p51). The Borden Turkeytails were Earl’s favorite Turkeytails. He began his May 20, 1949 journal entry (nearly 2 pages) with “Dad bought these for me. (number) 533 in the Bunch Inventory. $400.” From a cache of fourteen, the ten Turkeytails being offered in this sale were found in 1893 in Clark Co, IN. In the late 1890’s, Professor William W. Borden (eminent geologist and archaeologist) acquired the cache. In 1931, Eli Lilly sent Thomas A. Hendricks to buy the entire Borden collection. Hendricks purchased the Borden Turkeytails (for himself). After years of effort, Dr. Rollin Bunch acquired a portion of the cache (eight), with the remaining six ending up with Dr. Herbert Call. Earl later acquired two of the Call pieces through John Baldwin and Dr. Stan Copeland. Large, “cardboard” thin and very well made, Earl’s log entry ends with “Unsurpassed in the U.S.”.
