Description
Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Starburst Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO. / LYONS", attributed to Thompson Harrington, Lyons, New York, circa 1850, ovoid jar with applied lug handles and tooling to shoulder and rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of eight rays emanating from a circle. Two slip-trailed "2"'s to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A scarce, relatively early example of Thompson Harrington stoneware, made before he and his brother, Amos, acquired Nathan Clark's shop. Two 3 1/4" hairlines from rim on reverse. A 1" hairline from rim on side of jar. A tight X-shaped hairline on side of jar. Some minor chipping to one handle. A small chip to interior of rim.
