Description
Alfred Kubin (Austrian, 1877 - 1959). "Der Schwachling [The Weakling/The Wimp] [from the Weber portfolio]". Original lithograph. 1903. Signed and titled in the plate, lower right. Edition of 1000 (apparently all were not printed). Cream wove watermarked paper. Very wide (full?) margins. Fine impression. Very good to fine condition. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Raabe 8. Provenance: Estate of Jaled Muyaes. One of Kubin's most famous images. Our example is from the portfolio published by Hans von Weber in 1903. According to Paul Raabe ('Alfred Kubin: Leben-Werk-Wirkung'), Weber mailed 100,000 tri-lingual, four-page promotional brochures about the portfolio to magazines, collectors, etc. The results were disappointing: 'Absatz war sehr schwierig' ['sales were very difficult']. Pictured on the cover of "El Angel Terrible: Lo Fantastico y Grotesco in el Actual Arte Grafico Auxtraiaco" (Vienna: BM/UKS, 1989). Overall size: 13 1/2 x 16 3/4 in. (343 x 425 mm). Image size: 7 3/4 x 10 in. (197 x 254 mm). [25182] |400| {K90}
