Provenance: Estate of Jaled Muyaes. One of Kubin's most famous images. Our example is from the portfolio published by Hans von Weber in 1903. According to Paul Raabe ('Alfred Kubin: Leben-Werk-Wirkung'), Weber mailed 100,000 tri-lingual, four-page promotional brochures about the portfolio to magazines, collectors, etc. The results were disappointing: 'Absatz war sehr schwierig' ['sales were very difficult'].
