Description
Man Ray [after] (American, 1890-1976). "Still Life for Book Cover". Original color photolithotype. 1933-34. Printed 1934. Edition unknown, presumed small. Condition: some handling creases in the image, middle right; scratches; minor losses. "In the mid-1930s Man Ray tried his hand at color photography using the carbro process (carbon plus bromide), created by making three separate photographs of a subject through a red, a green, and a blue filter. He made this still life for the cover of his 1934 book, 'Man Ray Photographs 1920-1934 Paris', which was intended to present the range of his photographic work to an American audience. He included in the composition a bust of himself as well as curios from his studio, some of which appear in his works. He may have included the model, who bears a significant resemblance to Man Ray's former lover and studio apprentice Lee Miller, to suggest that he counted Miller among his creations."
