J. M. W. Turner [by or attrib] (English, 1775-1851). "Near Richmond Hill, North Yorkshire". Original (grey) wash drawing. c1822?. Signed with the monogram, lower right. Light cream laid paper. Condition: Affixed to a thin support; perimeter discolorations from old matting; some foxing verso though none recto; else very good. Provenance: Estate of a private collector, London. Turner first visited Yorkshire in 1797 and returned there throughout his life, inspired by the spirituality he found in its glorious landscapes. He visited more than 70 places, sketching and painting views from many different angles. Joseph Mallord William Turner was one of Britain's greatest landscape painters, watercolorists, and printmakers. Renowned as 'the painter of light', Turner's work helped to place romantic landscape painting on a par with history painting in the 19th Century, as well as planting the seeds of Impressionism.
