Description
Mexican Maskmaker, [20th Century]. "Mexican Mask [Traditional - 0179]. A Fariseo mask from the Holy Week celebration, San Bartolo de los Baños, State of Guanajuato [Mexico]". Hand-carved, hand-painted polychromed natural hardwood sculpture. 1950s. A "danced" mask. Not made for the tourist trade or for sale, but created by the indigenous person to be used only in a ceremonial dance. Overall condition good. Provenance: From a highly important private collection, consisting of over 2,000 masks, Mexico City. Included in the exhibition "Tradicion/Intervencion" held at the Alianza Francesa, Mexico City, Mexico, October 2013. Approx. 11in high, 21in wide, 6 1/4in deep (280mm x 540mm x 160mm).
