Description
RICHARD BARNETT SPENCER (UK, active 1840-1874); Ship's Portrait of Three-Mast Ship "N. Boynton" approaching Dover, oil on canvas, signed lower left "R.B. Spencer". In a restored period gold gesso matched corner frame, OS: 27 1/2" x 37 1/2", SS: 19 1/2" x 29 1/2". Cleaned and relined. Light craquelure. The "Boynton" was built in Warren, Maine in 1851, was owned by J.W. Elwell & Co. of Thomaston, Maine. She was captained by Capt. Albion Kendall Miller (who had been Warden of the State Prison in Thomaston). In 1877, she brought the first American emigrants to Australia
