Description
BRITISH MILITARY PORTRAIT - Three-Quarter Length Portrait, possibly Bedford Hinton Wilson (1804 - 1858), circa 1840, oil on canvas, unsigned, marked on fragment of label verso "May 19th, 1--2, L-----l, ----lson, Mrs. Robert Wilson". In later gold gesso frame, OS: 43" x 37", SS: 34 1/2" x 28 1/2". Restretched, tack holes on edges. Wilson served as a Colonel in the Venezuelan army, Aide de Camp to Gen. Simon Bolivar. He was later British Consul General and Charge d' Affaires to Peru and Venezuela. He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1852. While his uniform appears to be similar to a British ADC's (Aide de Camp), he might have worn it as representing British interests while serving as an ADC and Colonel with Simon Bolivar and his army.
