BUFFALO AMULETT
Jade. China, late Qing-Dynasty and later, 19th / 20th cent.
In the East Asian zodiac, cattle (quite often water buffalo) is a symbol of spring (the ploughing ox) and fertility. The jade depicts the animal large eyed, with curved back horns, and a stocky body. Very good haptic rounding. Green-yellow jade with darker, slightly iron red areas. Eyelet near the tail.
