Description
BUDDHA GRANTING PROTECTION
Bronze with fire gilding. Indo-Tibetan, presumably 18th to 19th cent.
Very finely crafted small cult bronze, offering the Buddha Shakyamuni sitting on a lotus pedestal over a stepped base in Padmasana – one hand held in the Abhayamudra, gesturing reassurance and safety. The characterful facial features of a Cakravartin are well formed. Urna on the forehead, the Ushnisha is tall with a smaller lotus bud at the tip. On the base, there are atypical depictions of elephants and a ritual vessel in the middle. On his backside are dragons around a flaming pearl. Good signs of age, some green patina.
HEIGHT 11,7 CM
From an old Austrian private collection
