Description
Ivory carving
Material: Elephant Ivory
Construction: One piece carved
Marks: None
Colors: Ivory
Description: An ivory carving of a Doctor's Lady within a clamshell in an unusual display. Surrounding the woman are the plants and animals found within freshwater lakes: serpents, frogs, and lotus lilypads. The piece is finely reticulated with bamboo shoots cradling the bottom and vein networks within the leaves. Detailing in the clamshell is impressive, with fine ridges and purposefully placed statuettes. The carving rests on a dark, hardwood stand, carved with geometric, layered shapes.
Period: C. 1920
Provenance: Dutchess County Estate
Size: H. 2.0x W. 8.5x D. 2.5"
Weight: 13.10 oz
Condition: Slight damage with a reattached lilypad and frog, as well as a glue repair in the bamboo shoot. There is a fine crack in the clamshell housing the lady with resulting small losses. Meta: Doctor's Lady, Nature
History: A Doctor's Lady is a small figurine depicting a nude or nearly nude female, usually said to have been used by traditional Chinese male physicians to allow a female patient to indicate the location of her discomfort in a modest fashion, without showing or pointing to her own body.
