Item Details
Description

Wooden Stand, Marquetry
Wood: Mahogany
Secondary Wood: Maple, Pine, Oak
Joinery: Adhesive
Features: This stand shows the furniture design technique known as Marquetry. Layers of wood veneer have been arranged into various geometric shapes to create an aesthetically pleasing array. The surface of the stand displays a grid pattern of dark brown crossed by a yellow-brown, with concentric circles of the two colors at each joint. The foundation of the surface board is marked all around by a chevron design consisting of alternating, parallel diagonals of light and dark brown. At the front of this foundation are two drawers, still incorporating the chevron design. They each have a single brass handle and key hole. At the bottom of these drawers are inscribed "R" and "L" respectively to denote where each drawer goes. The leg of the stand is plainly designed, trapezoidal, and features the grid pattern as well as the chevron. On each side of the squared leg, just above the base, are two raised circles of dark wood. The base has four legs keeping it upright and showcases the chevron pattern put on a horizontal plane.
Date: 1910
Provenance: Putnam County Estate
Size: H. 28.5x W. 18.75x D. 15.75"
Weight: 16.6lbs
Condition: Very light discoloration and marking are all over the stand. The veneer and stain on the surface of the stand have worn away in places, costing it its shine. There are various stains and scuffs along it, but no major chipping or pieces missing.Meta: Brass
History: Marquetry was developed during the 16th Century in Italy, specifically Naples and Florence. The technique of Marquetry did not see much presence outside of urban centers for over a century, when it was introduced to England. The technique has been experimented on, reproduced, and reimagined for centuries, creating off-shoots and entirely new design features.
