Description: This eagle is carved from a pine and gilded gold on the front and silver on the back. The eagle stands on a branch with its tail feathers splayed behind it. The head looks to its right, its wings spread. On the reverse in a hanging pin and incise carved 'Eagle # 17 Made by J. Upton, Bremen, ME.

Condition: The gilt has grown thin in some places.
History: John Upton was a wood carver from Bremen, Maine during the mid 20th Century, following the end of WWII. He was renowned for his work with state seals and other political figurines and carvings. He was born and grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. During WWI, Upton joined the Navy and fought against German submarines. His work with wood became famous the world over during the 1950s, and several of his works have made their way into private collections and museums.
