Cavalry Uniform Cord

Description: These orange wool cords were worn on the front of Cavalry uniforms by the United States Army during the latter half of the 1800s. They are almost five feet long, designed to loop around the shoulders of the cavalry uniform, attached to the buttons closest to the collar.The attached photo displays the correct method of wearing the cords, placed on a military man of the period in 1872.

Condition: The cords remain tightly woven, with very few stray fibers. The color is slightly darker with age and wear, but the rope retains its strength.The photo has few dark spots and impressions and a slight discoloration in the bottom left corner.
History: These cords were part of the full dress uniform of members of the United States Cavalry during the Civil War and for years after during the Indian Wars over disputed territory. They denoted rank and position.
