This lot comprises twelve bottles of 1985 vintage Crianza produced by Bodegas Muga from the wine region of Rioja in Spain.

Rioja is a classic amongst fine wines, known for being a long-lasting, elegant red, usually with cooler aromas. Rioja wine is created in the cooler northern part of Spain, in the wine-growing region of the same name. The Rioja wine type was first established in the 19th century, when the area experienced an increase in prosperity. Bordeaux was used as a blueprint for the development, which is why oak barrels were used for wine storage from the very beginning. Riojas are largely cuvées, of which the native Tempranillo red grape variety contributes the most in terms of flavor. What sets Riojas apart from the rest is that they are sold at varying stages of the ripening process: as Crinza (two years), Reserva (three years) and Gran Reserva (five years). Before reaching stores, the wines are matured in oak barrels and bottles. Just as with other red wine classics, there are numerous different styles. The traditional Rioja requires longer to reach its optimal maturity. Additionally, the so-called modern style ripens quicker due to specific vine-growing and oenological conditions.

1985 is considered a good vintage in Rioja, although quite a few winemakers would rate it even higher. The production of Gran Reservas was above average in this year, but this Crianza will also taste wonderful now!

The fill levels are excellent (into neck). Some labels are slightly soiled. The capsules are in perfect condition.

Bodegas Muga

The Muga family has worked in the wine industry since the 17th century. In the year 1932, the father of the current owner founded the Bodega in Haro, the center of Rioja Alta. The area surrounding the Haro train station is the birthplace of Rioja. It was from this location that the until then unknown ‘replacement’ wines were exported worldwide at the time of the phylloxera pest in Bordeaux towards the end of the 19th century.

Bodegas Muga is an exemplary historical wine estate. The production of red wines is carried out exclusively in large wooden vats, after which the wine is stored in small wooden barrels. In total, around 14,000 barrels were constructed and maintained for this purpose by the family owned cooperage.

In the past, the Reservas and Gran Reservas created with long maturation processes were the prime produce of the wine estate. Since the 80s, production has shifted towards modern wines which succeed on the international market without betraying their roots.
