This lot comprises one magnum bottle of 1986 vintage Château Beychevelle from the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux.

Saint-Julien is an appellation in Médoc by the Gironde estuary, adjacent to Pauillac. The predominant grape variety here is Cabernet Sauvignon and the wines are powerful, complex and long-lived. The wines from the northern part of the appellation are comparable to those from Pauillac, while in the south the wines tend to be more elegant like those from Margaux. In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 there are no premier cru wine estates in Saint-Julien, although the best grand crus of the region, including Château Beychevelle, would most likely be rated even higher today.

1986 was a very good wine year in Bordeaux, producing tannin-rich wines that develop wonderfully over many years. This wine will taste great – especially from a magnum bottle, for which only the best grapes are reserved.

The 1986 Beychevelle was last awarded 92 points in Robert Parker's Bordeaux Book (3rd edition) in 1998, after he had previously tasted the wine 7 years earlier. In 1989, the wine received 93 points from Wine Spectator. René Gabriel rated it 18 out of 20 points in 1999.

The fill level is excellent (into neck). The label is very slightly soiled and the capsule is in perfect condition.

Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle is a very well-known winery in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux. With its large flower field that spells out "Château Beychevelle", it has also become a tourist attraction. Vines have been cultivated on what is today this estate's soil since the Middle Ages and Château Beychevelle was awarded Quatrième Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The winery is advised by oenologist Jacques Boissenot, who also advises four of the five Premier Crus, as well as various other renowned wineries in Bordeaux.

Château Beychevelle has 90 hectares of vineyard, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (62 %), Merlot (31 %), Cabernet Franc (5 %) and Petit Verdot (2 %). The vines are, on average, approximately 25 years old. The wine is stored in oak barrels over a period of 18 months. 300,000 bottles of the first wine are produced every year on average.?
