The region of Umbria (capital: Perugia) lies in the heart of Italy and is home to 16,000 hectares of vineyards. Red wine varieties Sagrantino, Sangiovese and Montepulciano and white wine varieties Grechetto Bianco, Trebbiano Toscano and Verdello are predominant here.
Umbria is one of the few Italian wine regions not located by the sea. Until a few years ago, it was but a dot on the international wine map. Exceptions included the Lungarotti estate, which has nonetheless seen better times, and Antinori’s Castello della Sala with its Cervaro della Sala (a white blend made from Chardonnay and Grechetto), one of the most famous Italian white wines.
