Description
Pre Columbian redware burnished and slipped pottery dog, Colima, circa 200 BC-200 AD. Dog figure depicting standing on all four legs, head with perked and alert ears, almost almond shaped eyes, and closed mouth. Swollen puffed midsection at center with slightly bent splayed legs and thick tail with spout. Unmarked. Height 8.3", width 13.9", depth 7.4". Provenance: According to the consignor, acquired from Leland Little's auction in Hillsborough on June 12, 2004 whereby items were deassessioned from the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina. Note: Canine animals were an important part of the ancient culture and life as they provided companionship, security and at times, a food source.
Condition
No apparent damage or repairs. There is some wear to the finish commensurate with age.
