Description
18th Dynasty, 1550-1292 BC and later. A mixed group of items comprising: a pale steatite scarab with modern string, hieroglyphic text 'Amun Ra' and business card of M.A. Mansoor dated 22nd January 1937 giving particulars; three glazed composition scarabs with hieroglyphs to the underside and a notepaper with handwritten details of each; a green glazed composition amuletic plaque of one of the Sons of Horus; a sepia-toned photograph of a palm tree with handwritten note to the reverse 'Egypt .... With love from... Just a snap showing how the ... grow, some of these finished ... over 53 pounds'; a seal impression with one flat and one conical face, heater shield with legend '+SECRETVM NOSTRVM' (our secret) and to the reverse a standing nimbate figure of St. John the Baptist in a skin garment with right hand raised, legend to the border '+SIGILLVM BVRGENSIVM DE BROBVRG' (town seal of Bourbourg), and a band to the left with 'SC. IOhS' and old accession label. 22 grams total, plaque: 62mm (2 1/2"). Property of a British collector; by gift from his mother (neé Miss Christine McAffrey), 2010; gifted to her by Don Mardel in 1980; to him by descent from his uncle, prior to 1970; acquired Cairo from M.A. Mansoor in 1937. M. A. Mansoor (1881-1968) was an eminent Egyptian dealer and collector who, from 1904, sold artefacts from cases displayed at Shepherd's Hotel, Cairo; he also knew all the major Egyptologists and collectors of the day and sold important pieces to them and to many of the major museums. His collection of Amarna artefacts, which he started to form in the 1920s (now stored by the family in Los Angeles) is controversial to this day; his autographed business card accompanies the small, strung steatite scarab offered here. The seal relates to the town of Bourbourg near Dunkirk, France and is catalogued as no.D / 5516 in Douët-d'Arcq, L. Collection de Sceaux: Sceaux de la France, Paris, 1863-1868. TimeLine Auctions Ltd arranges printed catalogue rostrum Auctions, eAuctions and Timed Auctions where we offer antiquities, ancient artefacts / artifacts, antiques, collectibles, coins, medals and books for public sale.
